Reconstructive Surgery
in Davis

Sometimes when conservative treatments are inadequate for treating a condition, surgery is the only solution to repair or correct birth defects and other foot and ankle problems. At Davis Foot & Ankle Center, Dr. Basso offers foot and ankle reconstructive surgery that relieves pain and improves his patients’ quality of life. Reconstructive surgery is usually performed to correct foot structure or restore foot functionality following injury or illness. It can also be performed to improve the appearance of the patient’s foot or ankle. The word “reconstructive” defines these surgical interventions: by reconstructing bone and tissue, the surgeon also reconstructs the patient’s mobility, appearance, and peace of mind.

What kinds of reconstructive surgeries do you perform?

I’m highly experienced in a range of reconstructive surgical procedures to treat common foot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, severe flat feet, fractures, sports injuries, plantar fasciitis, tumors, severe infections, diabetes-related problems, or heel and bone spurs.

Reconstructive surgery can be minimally invasive when techniques using arthroscope and miniature surgical instruments are used. I also perform arthroscopic surgery on an outpatient basis. This is a great option for many of my patients because recovery time from this type of surgery is short, and complications are rare.

What does rehabilitation typically entail?

After the incisions are closed and dressed, depending upon the type of surgery, I may apply a cast or splint to hold the foot and ankle steady and prevent movement until functioning is restored.

Recovery needs a certain degree of patience. The time it takes to recover from reconstructive surgery depends on the severity of the injury and the type of surgery performed. You may need to use crutches or a wheelchair for a few weeks after surgery to avoid putting any weight on the reconstructed foot or ankle.
